Holiday Sparkle Photoset and Otaku Gifts From Jlist

December 17, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

Happy Holidays! First off, can I just start out with a tip for everyone? It’s a no brainer, really, but when you’re getting ready to travel, whether it be around the holidays or not, by all means make a list. And even after you do make a list of everything you need, go back and make sure you indeed did pack what you thought, and your eyes did not deceive you.

I bring this up because I’ll go right ahead and admit that this photoset was supposed to look different. No major issue–I’m happy with the end result, but I did this shoot over the Thanksgiving holiday, and as I packed the outfit I put together right before traveling, not only did I forget a piece of it, I grabbed the wrong wig as well (“major fail” I hear you thinking to yourself). Apparently I’m partially colorblind, and think a purple wig is a blue wig, or else my apartment has worse lighting than I realize. Either way, lesson learned, figured I’d pass that painfully obvious yet crucial advice to double check your luggage (I see you rolling your eyes, thinking “well DUH”).

The shoot ended up a bit more cutesy Lolita than expected, but hey, I rolled with it.

The wig is from Gothic Lolita Wigs, the dress is vintage, and the hairbow is from Rakuen. The shrug is offbrand, my apron is handmade, and “Maybelline Color Show Nail Falsies” (seemingly no longer available, according to Maybelline’s site) allowed me to pretend I had lovely nails for the day. Photo Set: Creepy Kids and Cereal Killers

October 31, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

Happy Halloweeeeen, friends! ^_^

Monster Cereal hits the stores but once a year and what better way to celebrate the arrival of this seasonal spooky goodness then with a photo set? To tell you the truth I only tried three of the cereals (I recommend Yummy Mummy). I’m actually not supposed to eat cereal, nevermind sugar, but I like the idea of Monster Cereal so…

Here’s some costumed fun for the holiday with a bit of behind-the-scenes anecdotes throughout:

Killer Gothic Lolita: The entire time those pictures were being taken, my grandmother was standing off to the side  (odd timing for a visit) repeatedly asking “What are you doing? It’s not Halloween, I don’t understand, why are you doing this?” Sometimes the best response is to pause then just say “the Internet.”

Welcome to Creepsville

First off, my suggestion is that you Youtube “Blood in My Eyes” by Calabrese while looking over this post, because it’s the perfect complement to these images of a should-be horror punk frontman.

The pep talk before the shoot went like this: “You’re an undead rockabilly ghoul…go creep around the cemetery like it’s your home.” And then I’m pretty sure the words “look evil, and like you think you’re cooler than everyone” came out of my mouth as well.

Lone Wolf

April 18, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

First thing’s first, two things need to be said about this new photo set:

After all this time, this was my first outfit photo set featuring a lady (other than myself, duh). Yeah, I know.  There was no reason behind it, it just worked out that way. But I realize 80% of the clothing I focus on is women’s clothing, yet 80% of the photos I take are of dudes, so I was wondering how long it would take before somebody called me out of that…

My model, Zue Byrd, had a clothing collection that gave me a bit of wardrobe envy. With the sea of spikes, skulls, and printed leggings it was like walking into a mini Trash and Vaudeville shop.

The wolf leggings are from GoJane, and if you’ve never been to that site, go now. You’ll find a nice selection of badass prints like these, and then you’ll also find a selection of absolutely crazy clown shit. I’m not even going to explain what I mean by that, just go take a look yourself.

Chaos and Solitude

April 4, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

We ditched the usual guyliner and undead, drug-addled vampire look, if only just this once. It was time. Even though my fashion interests span across the board, people usually refer to this as a goth blog (and I’ve made peace with it), so that’s a clear indication that I haven’t been giving other styles enough love. It was about time to get some punk/greaser style up in here.

My model, Mike Kwolek, brought a sleek wardrobe to the table, with a couple pieces I admitted I wanted to steal for myself (the creepers, definitely the creepers).

Dead End

March 24, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

The Black Diamond Bridge is pretty much visual perfection, so I was glad to finally utilize it in a shoot where I was behind the camera. This may have been one of my favorite shoots. There wasn’t too much pre-planning; people showed up, I threw some wardrobe options all over the floor, we winged the makeup and the only concrete plan was “we’ll shoot on the bridge,” which I think was to our benefit. I’m starting to realize there can definitely be such a thing as too much planning, and sometimes there’s a sense of satisfaction that comes with figuring things out along the way.

Less Vamp, More Metal

January 30, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

Sometimes I come up with a concept, other times someone tells me “I want to be mourning my lover in a cemetery,” or “we want to look like dead goth puppets.” In this case all I was told was “give me heroine eyes” (eyes rimmed in red eyeshadow), and we went from there.

Rooftop Anime Glam

December 7, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

I know I don’t resemble one of those “real life” anime girls with the kind of bulgy cartoon eyes that are likely to haunt you in your dreams (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, look at this now), but I feel like there was a slight increase in my level of anime-ish-ness during my most recent shoot.

Slight resemblance? Just a little? MAYBE??

The Blues of Ms. Vondasblut

November 29, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

Ugh, major technical difficulties lately, so I apologize for the lack of blog posts in the last two weeks. But my latest photoshoot, featuring the witchy, Maria Vondasblut, should make up for it.

This was a fabulous project to work on. All credit goes to Maria on this one. She showed up to my house with a sea of gorgeous black dresses and her monstrous makeup kit. While I hung out with a friend, drinking black coffee and talking about the intensity of Robert Smith, I left her to work her magic.

Robert Smith and Siouxsie Sioux Had a Visual Kei Baby

November 6, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

I’d been kicking around the idea of doing a visual kei shoot for some time, but it took a lot longer to find a taker than I’d expected (though in everyone’s defense, I kept bringing up surgical masks as my lead-in). But meet the newest addition to the Fashion Vandals crew, Jo Kielar–he apparently had an inner Jrock frontman dying to get out all along.

In addition to getting a new model on board, I was also fortunate to have a partner helping put everything in motion. The talented Chuckie Moore took care of all hair and makeup.
