We haven’t even made it more than a month into 2014, but I already have my list–my list of new and/or fast developing brands and designers I’ll be keeping an eye on in the coming year. In other words, here’s a look at who’ll be getting most of my money in 2014… This is going to be a year full of bold snapbacks, sophisticated casualwear, edgy otaku swag, and not to mention, some lolita sweetness. Take a look at five brands it’s time to get on your radar.

4 Simple Steps To Create A Faux Undercut

May 28, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

My two greatest loves these days, style-wise, are skeletal accessories and rockin a faux undercut. Well, the skeleton accessories–nothing new there, but it wasn’t until just recently that I realized how damn easy it is to fake the dramatic hairstyle. There are four basic steps: Part, Tuck, Spray, Pin. Continue on for more details…

I Heart You

February 5, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

Valentine’s Day is a huge bore, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the love-inspired pieces that hit stores around this time of year. Here’s a round up of some of my faves (is it any surprise that the hearts I prefer are black?):

I have a love/hate relationship with the Hottopic offshoot, Blackheart Lingerie, but they’re at their best when they lay off the gaudy accents. No rhinestones, no glitter, no foil–just a simple print and touch of sheer–perfect.

Lydia Deetz Goes to London…With Some Weirdo Dogs

January 15, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

For the first time in a long time, I don’t know how I feel about a collection. Amy Currie’s new Lydia Deetz-inspired line is the epitome of creepy cute, so I should love it, right? But something about it holds me back from swooning–I think I like the idea far more than the application.

Time To Give Unto Others (And Maybe Get A Little Somethin’ For Yourself)

December 2, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

Happy December, friends. I’m knee deep in Christmas gifting/shopping, but not in that reluctant, obligatory way that it can often morph into. I’m making a lot of gifts this year–someone asked for a handmade doll, I’m making someone else a customized pair of gloves, and I recently lured one of my friends into the addictive world of Monster High dolls, and I’m making tiny necklaces  for all six of her dolls (ah, lovely ridiculousness).

Speaking of making things, you may have noticed that there’s now an “Online Shop” page on the blog. If you hadn’t already seen the posts on my Twitter and Facebook, well you now know that my shop is up and running! From now until Christmas, I’ll be adding new items every Monday. Here’s a look at some of the items up for grabs:

The necklace is finally for sale, though not the boy (sorry). (more…)

Interview with Bink from Pearls & Swine

November 1, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

I recently interviewed Bink, the designer and visionary behind Pearls & Swine—a brand that specializes in hats, fascinators, masks, eyepatches, and hair accessories that seems to have been plucked straight out of a surreal dream, and often appear to defy gravity. Bink also developed a sister brand, Temptress of Waikiki,  where she produces custom burlesque accessories. Bink works nonstop (she currently has over 150 items in her shop!), and her selection caters to tastes across the board—glam rock, steampunk, pop culture kawaii, rockabilly, and delicate bridalwear. In our interview, Bink explains the “mistake” that spawned her business, her inspiration, and offers a bit of advice and insight to artists and creatives who struggle with self-doubt and the pressure to lead a “conventional” career path.

Q: On your website you say that you “always intended to be sensible” but could never really settle on a conventional career path. When you decided to devote your life to your artwork, were there people in your life that discouraged you or lead you to question your decision? If so, how did you deal with those negative outside forces?

A: I was the only real block that stopped myself from being allowed to be creative. I did have some friends who questioned whether or not anyone would really be interested in unconventional headwear, but on the whole I have been extremely fortunate in mostly having support in my business. My partner Trafford Parsons is an artist and has been there for me every step of the way, even when my doubts crept back (and they do, even after years of being in business).

Q: What advice would you give to young creatives who are pressured to take a more “conventional” path in life, or who are surrounded by people who may not “get” their work?

A: Looking back I realize that, had I allowed me to be myself, a creative, instead of fighting it till I was 30, my life would be very different now. However, I do believe that everything we endure is for a reason…perhaps I had to take the journey I did to get to where I am now.

My advice to anyone is always to know you are going to make it if you want something enough. Many creatives aren’t very driven or confident in their art. The secret of confidence is pretend–one day it will come but you have to have determination and a disregard for wealth…. just go for it!

Sexy Monopoly, Godzilla Bras, and Sophisticated Vamps–My Halloween Costume Faves

October 16, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

Have you picked your Halloween costume yet? I don’t really have one big costume planned–I’ll probably be Lydia Deetz on Halloween, a dead Victorian a few days before, and since I just picked up a set of custom-fitted fangs, I assume I’ll  be transforming into a vampire throughout October and beyond…

Dia De Los Muertos costumes… I guess that’s getting to be kind of overdone by now, but that doesn’t make this wig by Candy Crypt any less awesome.

Even though I’m already settled on my plans, I realize not everyone makes their Halloween plans as far in advance as I do. I collected a few of my favorite looks, and for those of you who’ve been putting things off to the last minute, hopefully these will offer you a bit of inspiration.

Black Milk and Bones in the Dark Forest

October 7, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

I finally scored myself a pair of Black Milk leggings from their recent Sick Puppies collection, and if I could actually get away with it in all situations, I’d basically never take them off. I picked up their striking “Bone Machine 2.0″ design, and in addition to being lovely, they’re also incredibly damn comfortable.

I was set on finding a pair of bone pants that I could wear without looking like I was specifically dressed up for Halloween, and I think I lucked out with these.
