Seoul Punk Rock, Photo Cafes, Fake Hair, and Beauty Product Reviews

I’d been going a mile a minute, exploring everything I could the moment I got here, but this weekend my body told me it’s time to slow down. I’ve been combating a combo of laryngitis, possibly bronchitis for almost two weeks now. If you’re going overseas, don’t ever just take it for granted that you can just pop into any drugstore and easily  pick up any medication you got at home. I’ve had to go to a Korean friend, explain my symptoms, have them write it out in Korean, and hand a pharmacist the paper like a child with a permission slip. The chance of me ever needing medication for an embarrassing ailment is reason alone to encourage me to master Korean sooner rather than later.

WIG TIMES

Illness aside, I’ve done my fair share of shopping, seeking out any and all things cute, and I’ve been trying my hardest to resist post-White Day chocolate sales (In Korea, Valentine’s Day is for the men, White Day is for the women). Subway stations and sidewalk sales are quickly becoming my go-to for good discount purchases, but one unique place my friend and I treated ourselves was at Pinkage in Hongdae–a wig and hair extension boutique with an in-house salon. My friend opted for a full head of hair, while I just went with a small set of fake bangs. Wigs range from about $80-140 and fake bangs start in the $20 range for simple front clip ins, while $40 will get you a set of bangs and fringe to cover the entire top of your hair, for a much more natural, seamlessly blended look.

Dark Style in the Summertime: Don’t be a Melty Goth

July 1, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

I bring it up because I’m guilty of it myself, but more importantly, because I care. Last year I was stubborn. I didn’t care to conform to the changing weather–I decided that the sun should somehow conform to me. I worn tight black bustiers in the sweltering heat, black tights under shorts with knee-high boots, and I refused to stop layering. But my friends, you deserve more than constant discomfort. You don’t deserve sweat pooling down your back or forced smiles to prevent those around you from saying “I told you so”. Instead of fighting summertime, embrace it and learn to work with, not against it.

As I say all of this, realize that I have a primarily black wardrobe, and have no intentions of changing that. What you need to rethink in the summertime is not necessarily colors, but fabrics and fits. Think breathability, movement, and if you’re going to wear something fitted take advantage of light fabrics, cutouts, and short hems. And c’mon, if the temperature exceeds 80 degrees, take some time to seriously reconsider anything involving boning, pvc, lace sleeves, latex, or shoes that lace up beyond the knee…

Punk Fashion’s Not Dead (If Tripp NYC Can Help It)

September 24, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

Tripp NYC released images from their S/S 2013 collection, and though I wouldn’t consider this to be one of my favorite lookbooks, I think the clothes–and most specifically, the pants–speak for themselves.

Time To Play With Dolls

April 3, 2012 Posted by fashionvandals

Internet dress-up dolls–are they childish time-wasters or useful practice tools for aspiring stylists? Well, if you’re pushing aside your work in order to put makeup on Justin Bieber (yes, that is a game you can find online), then I’d definitely say it’s the former. However, with the far more sophisticated dress-up sites you can currently find online–such as Looklet and Roiworld–you might actually be able to convince yourself that, in some way, you benefited from that hour spent trying to find the perfect virtual heels to complement your model’s virtual miniskirt (but probably not…).
