October Recap: Nonstop Vampire Party

October 31, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

I hope you all had a lovely Halloween : ) To tell you the truth, my Halloween day was actually pretty chill, but that’s mostly because I’ve been celebrating an early, extended holiday for the last two weeks or so. So what was my Halloween costume? Technically I’d say vampire (I was supposed to go with Lydia Deetz but I bought the wrong hat, didn’t realize till the last moment, blah blah blah), but here’s a look at my various costumes from the past few weeks.

I was a vampire.

Alexander McQueen and Beekeeper Chic

October 4, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

I can’t get over how stunning the new McQueen Spring 2013 collection is. One reviewer called the collection “slightly mad,” which I think is an indication that designer, Sarah Burton, is doing something right. Every season she’s managed to create new collections both surprising and thought-provoking.

The collection is opulent and ultra-feminine, with an edge. Burton managed to combine fishnets, petticoats, and luxe beekeeper hats and somehow make it all seamlessly fit together.

Philly Photo Snaps–Goth Barbies, Corsets, and Skeletal Ballerinas

September 3, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

I took a weekend trip to Philly a couple of weeks back, and for once there was no agenda. No fashion shows or goth clubs–so it really just turned into an all-day Chinatown fest. I took a few outfit snaps so you can see what new pieces have stolen my heart, and threw in a few randoms.

WNGTOBWFA Cosplay Dance Party

July 29, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

Friday night I got a bunch of friends together and we had our “We’re Not Going To Otakon But We’re Fun Anyway” dance party. It was a small, pretty casual hangout–just a handful of people drinking bubble tea and dancing to anime theme songs and DDR remixes–but it was pretty awesome to see the costumes everyone came up with.

The previous weekend, I hosted a craft night at my apartment. I got started on my Balzac-lyric-emblazoned face mask and my friend effortlessly created an Espeon (it’s a Pokemon, for all you non-nerds) hoodie in just a few hours.

Wizard World Philly: Cosplay, Cosplay, And More Cosplay

June 7, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

It had been about three years since the last time I went to the Wizard World Comic Con in Philly, and to tell you the truth I have no idea what I was doing all that time, thinking I could do without my annual nerd fix. I dearly missed making friends with indie artists, witnessing impromptu light saber battles, and primping in the ladies room next to various Naruto characters.

The Transformation Continues…

May 30, 2012 Posted by rissvandal

When I first announced I’d be creating a cosplay costume for Wizard World Comic Con, I promised to keep you guys posted throughout the creative process. A lot of people have been asking how the costume’s been going, and if it seems like I’ve been a bit quiet on the subject, I haven’t forgotten. It’s just that the journalist in me has always worked best under pressure, and I really hadn’t done much more than plan until this past week.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner…The Muppets!

May 22, 2012 Posted by fashionvandals

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but my life is basically one endless string of themed parties. This past weekend I attended a Muppet dinner party. The Muppets was one of my favorite movies so far this year, so it was only a matter of time.

Nothing Says Teatime Like Glowing Wigs and Panda Eyes–Amirite?

April 30, 2012 Posted by fashionvandals

It’s become a tradition that every year I round up a group of friends for a tea party. If you saw last summer’s post, we ventured to Sugar’s Tea Room in Forty Fort, PA, but this time around I hosted the party at my apartment and added a new aspect–a Glam Punk dress code.

The party was a lovely success–there were cakes, tea sandwiches, party favors, eight types of tea, and a springy floral decor.

Cosplay Adventure Time

April 17, 2012 Posted by fashionvandals

First off, I want to give you a heads up that you should expect a healthy dose of nerdiness in the coming weeks…

The Wizard World comic con I’ll be attending in Philly is just two months away, and after much deliberation, I’ve finally settled on my cosplay choice. My initial thoughts were Lynn Minmei from Macross, Urd from Ah My Goddess, or Lady from Devil May Cry, but I finally settled on Morrigan from the Capcom fighting game, Darkstalkers, but with a twist…

Move Over Santa, It’s a Very Gaga Christmas

December 20, 2011 Posted by fashionvandals

This past weekend I made a trip into NYC to check out the Gaga Holiday Workshop at Barneys. I’m by no means her biggest fan, but an entire department store floor featuring  Gaga statues and nothing but Gaga-related merchandise (meat dress shaped cookies, anyone?)–of course I had to scope it out.
