Fashion Inspiration: G-Dragon, K-Drama, and Boy Bands in Leopard Print

April 3, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

My last few purchases and fashion choices were heavily influenced by Korean men, and it all began with G-Dragon…

G-Dragon’s a solo artist and member of the boy band, Big Bang. I don’t even know how I came across his rainbow comic wonderland of a video, Crayon, but with his cartoony charm and more loud costume changes than Lady Gaga, I instantly fell in love. His music? Eh, I can take some and leave some. But I latched on to his flamboyant style, full of hard-edged and delicate contrasts.

Oozing with Style

March 12, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

Here’s a quick hit of mind-blowing absurdity from Urb Clothing. Undoubtedly there are times when you think “oh man, how fabulous would it be if my legs were melting right now?” Or “I want to give the illusion that there are fluids dripping out of my pants, but like, in a chic way, y’know?”

2

I think these melting tights are straight up crazy, but crazy in the way that makes me want a pair. $50 for legware that’s part creepy, part disgusting, and part trying too hard–I’d say that’s a decent enough price for an epic conversation piece.

And check it out in pink–totally looks like dripping ice cream. So, does anyone find these sexy? Or does anyone like the illusion of Gak (wooty wooh, throwback!) coming out of their pants? Seriously, let me know what you think about these, I’m curious.

Time to Play: The Best of Alt Fashion Dress Up Games

March 3, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

I’ve talked about dress up dolls before, but that was about a year ago, when I was still in the midst of my addiction.  Some people have cigarettes, other people social networking, and I had an incessant desire to play dress up games. And it’s not even like you win anything, I just had an insatiable compulsion to style. But whatever, it happens (does it?), and I’ve since faced my problem and cut down my dress-up gaming to maybe once or twice a month. I’ve become substantially more discerning as well–no more spending precious free time all too thoughtfully trying to decide what kind of shirt to place on Tracey Morgan (yes, even Tracey Morgan has his own fashion game).

One of the best things about playing these games is seeing some of the bigger sites try to seem “in the know” in terms of alternative styles, which results in cringe-worthy choices at times–like a Pink Floyd tee appearing in a street punk dress up game (yes, street punk dress up games exist as well) or the distracting fact that a large majority of dress up sites have an “Emo” style category. Is that really still a thing? Didn’t the stylized emo culture just morph into some murky thing involving dubstep and bronies? I don’t, maybe for another blog post entirely…

Time for Some Kitty Cats

February 24, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

While my mild disdain for cats remains intact IRL (I’M SORRY, I have my reasons), I seem to have developed an affinity for them when it comes to fashion. I’d been eyeing up this epic black cat sweater by Wildfox Couture (and the entire look in general) for quite some time, but I don’t have a spare $150 lying around, so I improvised.

Cat eye liner + cat collar + chiffon cat tee + my new wig from Amphigory. It’s much shorter than I was prepared for and takes some getting used to, but it’s growing on me.

What Do Steampunks Smell Like? Steam Bath Factory Deodorant Review

February 19, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

When you hear of steampunk scents, what are the first things that come to mind?

Does one of them smell like a typewriter wearing a monocle and spats? Or how ’bout a locomotive using a telegraph to send a message to a raven wearing a waistcoat?” (Thanks to Johnny B. for those guesses)

steambath

[Waahhh, messy workdesk]

Exactly. When you think of a scent catering to a particular subculture, your mind initially goes to the most ridiculous thing possible–a punk scent must smell like anarchy and a goth perfume would of course smell like clove cigarettes and Robert Smith’s tears. So first let’s get all the silly guesses out of the way–no, Steam Bath Factory products do not smell like goggles, or rayguns, or airships (or at least not the ones I’ve tried). So what do they smell like?

NYFW 2013: Furry Beasts, Lucid Dreams, And Seriously Sexy Neckwear

February 14, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

I know that New York Fashion Week wasn’t a competition, but if it were, the award for Best Overall Performance would go to Jeremy Scott. I don’t recall the last time I was this wowed by a collection. It’s so playfully creepy, with a youthful edge. In this collection we saw mummies, zombies, leopard-print, anarchy, and some absolutely crazy neon fur. I need these things in my life.

NYFW 2013: Highlighting the Heavy Hitters

February 11, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

New York Fashion Week is well under way and from what I’ve seen there seems to be a 50/50 split between the breathtaking and the absolute bores. In terms of bigger names, I’m finding myself impressed by designers I never would have imagined (Donna Karan) and let down by some of the ones I thought I could always count on (Y-3). This first NYFW post focuses on three of the big names that left an impression. I’ll deliver my faves from the more independent names and presentations at the end of the week–there are still lots of shows to check out and the presentation I’m absolutely dying to see still hasn’t happened yet, as of when I’m writing this on Monday night (Jeantrix!).

My favorite collection so far is Vivienne Tam. I’m a sucker for sharp lines, plaids with edge, and I love the stark yet minimal makeup and hairstyling of the models.

Friday, I’m in Love: Comics, Crystals, and Bad Batz-Maru

February 7, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

I’ve come across a lot of great finds lately, though not all of them warrant their own post, so today I thought I’d mention a few of the odds and ends I’ve been psyched about and dying to share. I’m thinking this should be a recurring feature–sharing not just my favorite fashion and beauty finds, but anything else that’s made an impression, including from housewares, websites, and maybe even the occasional dose of nerdness.

Bad Kitty Rider Jacket by UNIF Clothing / Badtz Maru Skirt by Japan L.A.

Studded outerwear and biker jackets are basically a wardrobe staple at this point, and are becoming kind of tired, so I’m glad to see that UNIF continues to add variety and innovation to the trend. They have a lot of great designs–studded army jackets, spiked fur coats, but their Bad Kitty jacket is my top pick. As for the Badtz Maru overall skirt…would I wear it? That I’m not so sure about, but I love it. And while a lot of people roll their eyes at grown women rocking Sanrio, why give up something you love just because of age? And if that thing you love just happens to come in the form of a badass miniskirt, even better.

I Heart You

February 5, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

Valentine’s Day is a huge bore, but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate the love-inspired pieces that hit stores around this time of year. Here’s a round up of some of my faves (is it any surprise that the hearts I prefer are black?):

I have a love/hate relationship with the Hottopic offshoot, Blackheart Lingerie, but they’re at their best when they lay off the gaudy accents. No rhinestones, no glitter, no foil–just a simple print and touch of sheer–perfect.

McQueen’s Vampiric Pre-Fall 2013 Collection Absolutely Slays (Pun Intended)

January 23, 2013 Posted by rissvandal

First of all, words can not describe how much I am in love with this dark, sleek collection. Second–is there anyone else that can’t help but think of The Volturi (yes, that’s a Twilight reference) when they look at these images, or is it just me?
