NYFW 2013: Highlighting the Heavy Hitters

February 11, 2013 | Posted by rissvandal

New York Fashion Week is well under way and from what I’ve seen there seems to be a 50/50 split between the breathtaking and the absolute bores. In terms of bigger names, I’m finding myself impressed by designers I never would have imagined (Donna Karan) and let down by some of the ones I thought I could always count on (Y-3). This first NYFW post focuses on three of the big names that left an impression. I’ll deliver my faves from the more independent names and presentations at the end of the week–there are still lots of shows to check out and the presentation I’m absolutely dying to see still hasn’t happened yet, as of when I’m writing this on Monday night (Jeantrix!).

My favorite collection so far is Vivienne Tam. I’m a sucker for sharp lines, plaids with edge, and I love the stark yet minimal makeup and hairstyling of the models.

There is a lot going on with Cynthia Rowley’s collection. It’s part witchy, part attractive bag lady, part “I rooted through my grandma’s old clothes.” The layers and fabric combinations somehow work together to create an absolutely beautiful mess. And the fact that I could fall inlove with an outfit of entirely bright blues? That’s a first.

Probably one of the few lines to actually live up to my expectations was Cushnie et Ochs. Sexy, cleanly structured, and wonderfully vampy.

As for Y-3, as I said, I wasn’t all that impressed, but I do think it’s crucial to leave you with an image of one piece from their collection that caught my eye. I have a great appreciation for asymmetry but, uh…

Have you been keeping up with NYFW? What are some of your favorite shows, and what do you think of the ones I’ve highlighted so far?
