The Fashion Elite of Anime and Manga

September 18, 2012 | Posted by rissvandal

My nerd interests are almost as big a part of my life as fashion is, so every once in a while I try to make the two worlds collide. I was perusing pics of characters from the manga Paradise Kiss–a series about young, aspiring fashion designers–when I got the idea that it might be fun to compile a list of the most stylish characters is anime and manga.

The idea was simple, but completing the task was somewhat more difficult than I expected. Keep in mind, this is not a list of the coolest looking characters, so no matter how badass a character’s appearance, if they live in the same uniform all series, they’re not in the running. And granted, this is a short list and far from complete, but hey, consider it a start.

 Nana Osaki from NANA

Nana Osaki is a character after my own heart. She has a closet full of garter belts and torn clothes, sports Vivienne Westwood, and even though she has an affinity for potentially cheesy bondage collars, with her effortless punk swagger, she somehow pulls it off.

Sheryl Nome from Macross Frontier

Sheryl Nome has a versatile style that’s playful and over-the-top, but still sexy, as opposed to Macross’ original pop idol, Lynn Minmei, who always seemed to look like an awkward 12-year-old girl dressed up for a dance recital. Granted, I’m comparing a character from the 2000s with a character created back in the 80s, but regardless, Sheryl wins, hands down.

George from Paradise Kiss

When I started making this list, I decided I would only pick one character from each Ai Yazawa series–though really all of her characters deserve to be on it. It was hard to settle on which character to go with from this series (my original choice was Miwako), but since I was struggling to find a male character, I settled on the posh dandy of a man that is George Koizumi.

Yuuko Ichihara from XXXHoliC

I don’t feel like there needs to be much explanation as to why she made it on this list. The simplest way to sum up her style? Dark opulence.

 Chi from Chobits

I kind of felt like this was too easy, but at the same time, could I really not include her? She pretty much rocks the sweet loli look like no other.

 Saber from Fate/stay night

Last up is Saber, which I realize is a slightly odd choice, but I appreciate the elegance of her uniforms. With so many warrior characters in anime, I wanted at least one represented in the list.

So are there characters I left out? No doubt–there’s so much anime and manga out there that it’s hard to keep up. And much thanks to everyone who sent me suggestions via Facebook. If you haven’t yet weighed in, feel free to share who you think should have made this list.

Great post. It would be cool to see the same thing done with comic book characters.
