Wizard World Philly: Cosplay, Cosplay, And More Cosplay

June 7, 2012 | Posted by rissvandal

It had been about three years since the last time I went to the Wizard World Comic Con in Philly, and to tell you the truth I have no idea what I was doing all that time, thinking I could do without my annual nerd fix. I dearly missed making friends with indie artists, witnessing impromptu light saber battles, and primping in the ladies room next to various Naruto characters.

I showed up at the con as Morrigan from Darkstalkers, just as I’d announced. Sadly, I don’t have any good pics that show the altered biker jacket I made with the back patch, which was the part that gave the outfit a street punk look, but you can expect an additional photo shoot in the near future. I made the trip to  the con with my friend, Donald, who miraculously assembled a spaceman suit in about two day’s time.

As usual, the con was a wonderfully entertaining experience. Donald entered the cosplay contest, I participated in sci-fi speed dating (awkward but not AS awkward as you might assume), and we attended a “Ladies of Evil Dead” Q+A panel. We also gallivanting from vendor to vendor, bought artwork, and snapped pics of all the creative costumes. I was relieved to see that everyone wasn’t dressed as an Avenger, and was surprised to come across a few characters I didn’t recognize. Although, instead of talking about the cosplay, why don’t I just show you:

There really were so many cosplayers running around, it was impossible the take pictures of them all (I’m so bummed I never got to track down the female Skeletor), but I at least caught up with most of my favorites. It’s worth mentioning that I was mistaken for Lady Gaga three times that day, which left me thoroughly confused. If someone knows of a time when Lady Gaga wore an outfit that involved bat ears coming out of her head, please let me know…

Regardless, the con was a good and slightly ridiculous time. I’d say it’s an event any nerd (comic, anime, sci-fi, though not really so much gaming) should try and check out at least once.  And I hope to be able to make an appearance at one or two more comic cons throughout the year, so I’ll keep you posted. Anyone else hitting up any cons this summer?
